In this week's edition of the Think Inside The Box newsletter, I am taking a step back.
I want to take a moment to explain how and why I came up with the idea behind my blog and this newsletter that you’re reading.
Why think inside the box? Is there something wrong with thinking outside the box?
Now, I am all for innovation and creativity in business. But I think this concept is overused and overrated.
While we celebrate disruptive innovators who transformed industries overnight, the real story is more complicated. Consider these cautionary tales:
-
Better Place raised nearly $1 billion for battery-swapping EVs, only to sell fewer than 1,500 vehicles before bankruptcy
-
WeWork's scattered "outside-the-box" ventures contributed to its spectacular valuation collapse
-
Countless small businesses drain resources pursuing novelty rather than mastering fundamentals
The costs of pursuing radical innovation are substantial:
-
90% of startups fail, with 42% citing "no market need"
-
New product development typically costs $150,000-$2 million
-
The failure rate for "new-to-the-world" products exceeds 90%
What if the real opportunity lies not in abandoning the box, but in mastering what's already inside it?
For example, companies like Basecamp have achieved consistent profitability since 2004 not by "disrupting" project management, but by making it better in ways that matter to customers.
So, through this blog and newsletter, I want to introduce an alternative approach: "thinking inside the box."
Instead of asking "How can we reinvent our business?" my blog posts and emails explore a different question: "How can you master the fundamentals in ways your competitors haven't?"
As a result, you get proven and actionable ideas to set your business apart in a crowded market without reinventing the wheel.
Thanks for reading. See you soon!
